What to do if you breakdown

 In Star Tech News

The thought of breaking down can be nerve wracking, but knowing what to do if this does happen, especially on a motorway, can make it a safer and far less stressful process.

What to do if you breakdown

It’s useful to know the causes behind why your car could breakdown and also how to avoid it happening in the first place, here are the top 3 reasons:

  1. Warning lights – we know it’s tempting to ignore those flashing lights that may appear on your dashboard, but in 99% of cases, if a light shows it means something is wrong with your car. So if you see an warning alert, give Star Tech a call and one of our expert technicians will advise what your recommended action should be, and if necessary can book your car in for diagnostic testing.
  2. Oil leaks – notice oil on your driveway? This is likely to be a sign of an oil leak, which can lead to a breakdown due to a serious mechanical problem. Save yourself money and potentially serious hassle by popping your car in at our service centre for a quick investigation to determine the cause of the leak.
  3. Noisy start-ups – is your car not sounding as smooth as it should be? This could be a sign that your battery is low, which is a leading cause of breakdowns!

Unforeseen breakdowns

So, you had no warning signs and your car is starting to falter, what do you do? Firstly, don’t panic! Find a safe place to pull over and follow these steps to get yourself safely back on the road as quick possible.

  1. Move to the side of the road, as far to the left as possible. If you are on a motorway, pull into the hard shoulder.
  2. Turn on your hazard lights and side lights immediately.
  3. Get all passengers out the car to a safe place to wait, especially if you are on a motorway.
  4. Call your breakdown company or our technicians for assistance.
  5. Stay calm!
