Coronavirus Warranty, Servicing & Mot Guidelines

 In Uncategorised

Mercedes Benz & BMW Update.

Naturally, during these strange times, you may be wanting some reassurance about your manufacturer’s warranty if your car’s service is overdue. You may also be assuming that you can enjoy a 6 month’s Mot break. However, the headlines out there can be a little misleading so let us make it simple & clear for you.

Mercedes Benz & Smart

Servicing

For Mercedes-Benz cars, the limit has increased to the sooner of 180 days past the current due date for a service to be completed or the vehicle reaching the 3,728 mileage interval for a service to be completed (previously 90 days / 1,864 mileage interval).

For smart vehicles, the limit has increased to the sooner of 180 days past the current due date for a service to be completed or the vehicle reaching an excess of 20% of the current mileage interval for a service to be completed (previously 90 days / mileage interval exceeded by 10%).

Please be advised that delays to your vehicle being serviced, which are within the temporary revised limits for servicing set out above, will not invalidate your vehicle’s warranty. However, all of your other obligations and exclusions in relation to your vehicle’s warranty remain.

So, to recap….

Mercedes Benz & Smart

Servicing – Mercedes will allow a grace period of 180 days or 3728 miles past service due date/time.

Warranty – Mercedes will look at warranty claims favourably.

BMW & Mini

According to BMW, they have stated the following.

Customers requiring a vehicle service during the delays caused by Coronavirus can rest assured that your warranty will be unaffected by this disruption.  All cars serviced within 3 months or 2,000 miles (whichever is earlier) of the service indicator will be protected in full by any applicable warranty.

For customers with a warranty expiry during the coronavirus restrictions (from 14th March 2020 onwards), we will extend your warranty coverage, including Roadside Assistance cover, until 30th June 2020. End of warranty checks due during this period will also be fulfilled.

BMW will honour Service Inclusive packages expiring between 14th March and 30th June for any overdue work. They will also honour any service due under a service package that has expired during the coronavirus closures.

If your car is an M-car requiring a 1,200 mile running in service, you should not exceed 2,000 miles.

So, to recap….

BMW & Mini

Servicing – BMW will allow a grace period of up to 3 months or 2000 miles. BMW will honour service packs expiring between 14th March and 30th June for any overdue work

Warranty – BMW have extended warranty until 30th June 2020 for vehicles where warranty expired from 14th March onwards

Mot extensions – In this video, Matt explains the new Mot rules…

Matt Peacock, MD explaining the new Mot extension

Matt explains “It’s not as straight forward as every car after the 30th March getting an automatic extension. The way the DVLA are working it is that they will extend your Mot expiry date a few days before the original expiry date. So, for example, if your car is due for Mot in 3 days’ time, it would be extended for 6 months. However, if your car’s Mot due date is due in 2 weeks’ time, it will still be due in 2 weeks’ time as the process is assessed on a rolling basis.

It is also the owner’s responsibility to ensure their car is kept in a roadworthy condition, which we are sure you all do anyway, with Star Tech’s support!”
