What is ADAS?
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS for short, is the collective name given to describe a growing range of vehicle features that help boost car and driver safety. ADAS checks things such as braking, speed and steering tasks, then either automatically takes action or sends an alert to the driver, using visual and audio warnings. These help to prevent human error from causing an accident and all new cars must now be fitted with some form of ADAS.
ADAS systems require recalibration after certain vehicle maintenance and repairs are carried out to continue to work effectively. These include any work on the suspension or steering, where parts are removed and either replaced or refitted, and the removal of body panels or the windscreen. It can even need recalibrating after driving over a pothole.
How does it work?
These systems use a series of sensors and cameras, sometimes in partnership with artificial intelligence, to detect the position of the vehicle and other road obstacles, so the car can act or alert the driver. Here are some of the technologies to look out for:
